What is a Renovation Passport

A step-by-step renovation plan for your home

The Renovation Passport is a new tool introduced by the EU EPBD directive and the Czech New Green Savings programme (NZÚ). It is based on the actual condition of your building and its real energy consumption.

It isn't a complex technical document — it's an easy-to-follow guide showing how to plan the renovation properly, from the very first measure all the way to a fully energy-efficient, modern building.

≠ EPC

An EPC (PENB) assesses the current state. The Renovation Passport is a long-term strategy for the future.

= NZÚ

It serves as your ticket to higher grants for individual renovation measures.

Context

Why renovation passports exist

The EU EPBD directive

The final wording of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) was approved by the EU Council on 12 April 2024. Its goal is to achieve a fully zero-emission building stock in Europe by 2050. The Czech Republic is expected to update its national renovation strategy so that the pace of high-quality, deep renovations increases significantly. The reform also introduces a new definition of zero-emission buildings — structures with very low heating and cooling demand and a reliable source of zero-emission heat or electricity. The new rules apply to renovations of existing buildings as well as to new construction.

Zero-emission buildings of the future

Thanks to comprehensive, high-quality insulation and modern technology, a zero-emission building should maintain a stable indoor temperature in both winter and summer. It shouldn't rely on fossil fuels such as natural gas or coal for heating or cooling — the focus is on renewable energy. From 2030 onwards every newly built home will also have to meet zero-emission building parameters.
